High Country North Carolina Area Attractions

  • Easy access to the Blue Ridge Parkway - Easily one of the most beautiful motor roads in America, if not the world. Replete with hiking trails, picnic grounds, and beautiful vistas, this scenic highway follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains from the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina/Tennessee border. Make sure to visit the Linn Cove Viaduct, the first bridge of its kind in the east, and Moses H. Cone Memorial Park near Blowing Rock.

  • Skiing - Some of the southeast's best skiing is within 45 minutes of Empty Pockets, including Sugar Mountain, Ski Beech, Appalachian Ski Mountain, and Hawksnest. Ski rentals, day and night passes, and ice skating are all available close by.

  • The Highland Games on Grandfather Mountain - Americans of Scottish descent gather in the high meadows of Grandfather Mountain every July for three days of traditional sport, feasting, and celebrating. A great event open to all!

  • Octoberfest on Beech Mountain - The autumn German festival lives on even in the mountains of North Carolina.

  • Horn in the West - an outdoor drama performed at the Daniel Boone Ampitheatre in Boone. Season runs from mid-June to mid-August with shows every night except Mondays.

  • Canoeing and White Water Rafting - Great white water adventures are available from several local outfitters and guides.

  • Appalachian State University - Cultural events, sports, and academic facilities are all available at the largest university in western North Carolina.

  • Fine Dining and Entertainment are available at dozens of restaurants in the Boone/Blowing Rock/Banner Elk area.

  • Shopping - Antique dealers, galleries, and malls flourish in the High Country. Also be sure to see the Mast General Store for authentic country shopping and atmosphere.

  • Outdoor Activities - Golf, tennis, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing are all close-by. A day in Linville Gorge, or on top of Grandfather Mountain, can restore the soul.
